AND RESEARCH FORUM (NDRF)
DESIGN AWARDS
2007
|
The National
Design and Research Forum -- a peripheral body of the
Institution -- had instituted these awards with a view to
promote advancement of engineering design and to facilitate
the exchange of ideas on its different aspects. These awards,
as finalized by the NDRF, are given away ceremonially during
the Indian Engineering Congress held annually at any one of
the centres of the Institution spread all over the country.
The following
personalities have been conferred with the NDRF Design Awards
for the year 2007 during the Twenty-second Indian Engineering
Congress held at Udaipur, Rajasthan, during December 13-16,
2007. |

Shri
S C Chetal, a mechanical engineer, joined Indira Gandhi
Centre for Atomic Research in 1971. Shri Chetal is
contributing significantly for the fast breeder reactor
programme in the domain of design, R & D and
manufacturing technology. Through detailed optimization
studies, Shri Chetal led the multi-disciplinary team to
achieve a safe, reliable and economic 500 MW Prototype Fast
Breeder Reactor (PFBR) design. He has played a key role in
material selection for PFBR from fuel cladding to condenser
tubes. He has also provided excellent design support for
Zirconium and Titanium sponge production.

Shri
A T Samuel obtained
his M.Tech degree in Structures from Indian Institute of
Technology, Kharagpur in the year 1978. Shri Samuel is the
leader of a team of professionals, responsible for
conducting feasibility studies, detailed project reports,
execution design, project management activities and
construction consultancy services for various buildings and
highway / bridge projects, urban flyovers, aqueducts, etc.
He has won many projects on competitive designs at national
and international levels. He is attached with many
professional societies.

Dr
Nitin W Ingole
did his M.E. in Environmental Engineering from the
Government College of Engineering, Amravati in 1988 and
obtained PhD in Engineering and Technology from Amravati
University. He was the Principal of Atharva College of
Engineering, Mumbai. He has carried out testing and
consultancy work of Wastewater Treatment Plant, Job-mix
Design of flexible pavements for roads and up-gradation of
treatment plant. Dr Ingole was deeply involved in carring
out the design of facultative pond for treatment of
pharmaceutical waste by upgradation / modification of
existing Effluent Treatment Plant. His other contribution in
the field of environmental engineering includes, design of
Sewage Disposal System based on solid immobilized biofilter
and phytoremediation technique for recycling of treated
effluent for gardening in construction. Dr Ingole is
attached to a number of academic bodies and professional
societies. He has been conferred the ‘Best Engineering
College Teacher Award for Maharashtra State’ (for the year
2005) by the Indian Society for Technical Education.

Dr
A K Majumder obtained
M.Tech degree in Mineral Engineering from Indian School of
Mines, Dhanbad in the year 1988 and Ph.D in Mineral
Engineering from University of Queensland, Australia in
2003. Dr Majumder is responsible for the development of
(i) flow sheets for beneficiating low grade rock
phosphates and extraction of potassium from glauconitic
sandstone; (ii)
an innovative process flow sheet to upgrade Narmada
river sand of Hoshangabad area of Bhopal to a grade
acceptable for steel foundries. Dr Majumder recently
developed ‘Coal Washability Index’ which is being used
by the coal preparation plant designers in India and abroad.
He has also developed a new concept of optimizing the
performance of gravity based coal washing unit operations.

Dr
A L Chandraker, after
receiving his M Tech with specialization in the area of
Turbo Machinery from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
in 1973, pursued his doctoral research in Aero-engine Jet
Noise. He joined BHEL as Senior Engineer in Corporate
R&D Division in 1978, and worked for development of
Fortran based FEM/FVM softwares for turbo-machine blade
profile. He led the newly formed Computational Fluid
Dynamics (CFD) group as founder/head since 1991. In addition
to CFD, he has been overall in-charge of Turbo-machinery
Laboratory accredited by NABL. Dr Chandraker designed on his
own LP bladings for 800 MW steam turbine and five numbers of
US Patents have recently been granted to him. He also
designed a Kaplan runner for hydro-turbine (for 30-60 M Head
application).

Dr
Dipti Deodhare received
her MSc (Computer Science) degree from Pune University and
MS (Engineering) and PhD degrees in Computer Science and
Automation from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
She has been working at the Centre for Artificial
Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR), Bangalore, a DRDO
laboratory, since 1991. She has made sterling contributions
towards the design and development of systems based on
computational and artificial intelligence. Significant
amongst these are, the design framework and tools for Data
Mining using neural networks, automatic processing and
collation of reports in natural language, etc.
