REVISED SCHEME FOR SECTIONS 'A' AND 'B' EXAMINATIONS

The Revised Scheme for Sections 'A' and 'B' Examinations has already been introduced with effect from Summer 2005 Examinations as per the new syllabi. Examinations in the existing scheme (on the present syllabi) shall be conducted concurrently with the revised scheme (on the revised syllabi) for two consecutive examinations, i.e., Summer 2005 and Winter 2005 examinations. Rules (Volume I) and Syllabi (Volume II) of the revised scheme would be available for sale at the State / Local Centres as well as at the Headquarters of IEI on payment of requisite amount.

Salient Features of the Revised Scheme

Section 'B' Examination of the Revised Scheme would be conducted in ten engineering disciplines, viz, Civil, Chemical, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Mechanical, Materials and Metallurgical, Mining, Production and Textile Engineering.

1.   Introduction of Grading System

Grading system, instead of marks, shall be followed for evaluation of all elements of the revised scheme. However, candidates continuing in the existing scheme will be awarded marks as per existing examination rules.

2.   Project Work and Laboratory Experiments

Project work and sessional work on laboratory experiments are compulsory and shall be evaluated. A candidate shall be eligible for project work and sessional work on laboratory experiments only after securing minimum grade ‘C’ in any 5 (five) subjects in an engineering branch of Section 'B'.

3.   Number of Subjects to Pass

Section 'A' (Non-diploma)

10 subjects

Section 'A' (Diploma)

04 subjects

Section 'B'

09 subjects plus Project Work and Laboratory Experiments

4.   Permissible Number of Subjects in an Examination

Maximum number of subjects in which a candidate shall be permitted to appear at a time in an examination is as follows :

Section 'A' (Non-diploma)

Four subjects

Section 'A' (Diploma)

All four subjects

Section 'B'

Four subjects

5.   Time Period to Pass Section 'A' / Section 'B' Examination

The time period to pass Section 'A' and Section 'B' Examinations is as follows :

Section 'A' : 6 (six) years from the date of election as Technician / Senior Technician member.

Section 'B' : 6 (six) years after passing Section 'A' Examination.

The above stipulated period for Section 'B' will also be applicable to Associates / corporate members desiring to appear in Section 'B' Examination in an additional branch of engineering from the date of their first appearance in the examination.

6.   Procedure of Registration for Section 'B'

After passing Section 'A' examination, marks-sheet / grade card along with format for registration for Section 'B' will be sent to individual candidates. The content of the format will mainly include choice of engineering branch, optional subjects, engagement details and blank Identity Card, etc. For this purpose, a non-refundable registration fee of Rs. 2000/- only for Section 'B' is required to be paid. No further fee towards the allotment of Project Guide shall be charged. The candidate will become eligible for project work after securing minimum grade ‘C’ in any 5 (five) subjects of Section 'B'.

The registration for Section 'B' shall be valid for six years only.

In case a candidate desires to change the branch of engineering after registration for Section 'B', he has to apply afresh with a registration fee of Rs. 2000/- only without change of original registration period of six years.

7.   Procedure for Switching Over from Existing Scheme to Revised Scheme

Candidates, interested to switch over from the existing scheme to the revised scheme of examination, are required to apply in the prescribed Prescribed Proforma (also available in print in the December 2004 issue of Technicians’ Journal, page 46) with a processing fee of Rs. 400/- only. Section B Candidates are required to pay an additional amount of Rs. 2000/- only towards registration for Section B along with the aforesaid proforma. Candidates, under eligibility criteria of items 11 (A) (i) and (ii), 12 (A) and 13 (A) are only required to apply for the same. Candidates, under eligibility criteria of items 10 (i) and (ii), 11 (B), 12 (B) and 13 (B) need not to apply for continuing in existing scheme as they would be eligible as per revised scheme only.

8.   Criteria to Appear in Revised Scheme

Candidates falling under different criterion, as given below, should refer the relevant item for their eligibility in the revised scheme :

(i)  Enrolled on or after 01 Nov 2004 ¾ see item 9.

(ii)  Passed Section A up to Summer 2004 Examination but could not register for project work till 07 Jan 05 ¾ see item 10 (ii).

(iii)  To be passed Section A in Winter 2004 Examination ¾ see item 10 (i).

(iv)  Enrolled up to 31 Oct 04 and are within the stipulated period of six years ¾ see item 11.

(v)  Continuing under two-year extension / continuing under six-year re-registration (but not expiring in Winter 2004) ¾ see item 11.

(vi)  Enrolled up to 31 Oct 04 but not yet appeared in Section A / Section B Examination ¾ see item 11.

(vii)  Whose two-year extension will expire in Winter 2004 ¾ see item 12.

(viii)  Whose six-year registration period will expire in Winter 2004 ¾ see item 13.

9.   Eligibility Criteria for Newly Enrolled Members

Candidates enrolled as Technician / Senior Technician members with effect from 01 Nov 04 shall be permitted to appear in the examination in the Revised Scheme only.

10.   Eligibility Criteria to Appear in Section 'B' under Revised Scheme only

Existing candidates, passing Section 'A' examination in Winter 2004, shall be permitted to appear directly in Section 'B' examination only in the revised scheme, as per the prescribed rules for the revised syllabi. They need not to apply for the revised scheme separately and processing fee of Rs. 400/- only shall not be applicable.

Existing candidates, passed Section 'A' up to Summer 2004 examination and do not register for project work till 07 Jan 05, for any reason whatsoever, shall be permitted to appear directly in Section 'B' examination only in the revised scheme as per prescribed rules for the revised syllabi. They need not to apply for the revised scheme separately and processing fee of Rs. 400/- only shall not be applicable.

Such candidates shall be required to apply for registration for Section 'B' as per laid down procedure (see item 6). Six-year period shall be counted with effect from Summer 2005 Examination.

11.   Option of Selection of Scheme for Existing Members

Two options are available to existing members (not applicable for the category as specified in items 9 and 10) pursuing Section 'A' / Section 'B' Examination in the existing scheme till Winter 2004 examination :

(A) To switch over from existing scheme to revised scheme

(B) To continue in existing scheme

The eligibility criteria for both the options are given hereunder:

(A)   To Switch Over from Existing Scheme to Revised Scheme

(i)   Unsuccessful candidates of Section 'A' willing to switch over from existing scheme to revised scheme, forfeiting their previous subject(s) exemption(s), would be allowed provided they apply in the Prescribed Proforma (also available in print in the December 2004 issue of Technicians’ Journal, page 46) with a processing fee of Rs. 400/- only. The filled-in proforma with requisite fee must reach Headquarters of the Institution latest by 08 Apr 05 to appear in the revised scheme. This option will not be entertained beyond the stipulated date under any circumstance.

Candidates appearing for the first time or those not appeared in the Winter 2004 Examinations are advised to send this proforma duly filled-in with the requisite fee as early as possible as they do not need to wait for declaration of Winter 2004 Examination Results.

(ii)   Unsuccessful candidates of Section 'B' willing to switch over from existing scheme to revised scheme, forfeiting their previous subject(s) exemption(s) and project work, would be allowed provided they apply in the prescribed proforma (available in December 2004 issue of Technicians’ Journal) with a processing fee of Rs. 400/- only. The filled-in proforma with requisite fee must reach Headquarters of the Institution latest by 08 Apr 05 to appear in the revised scheme. This option will not be entertained beyond the stipulated period under any circumstance. Their full pass status of Section 'A' will remain unaltered.

The stipulated period of six years of passing Section 'A' / Section 'B' examinations, under category (i) and (ii) above, shall be counted from the implementation of the Revised Scheme, i.e., from Summer 2005.

(B)   To Continue in Existing Scheme

(i)   Existing members, enrolled up to 31 Oct 04, who would not be interested to switch over from the existing scheme to the revised scheme by 08 Apr 05, the transitory provisions would be available to them for two consecutive Examinations, i.e. Summer 2005 and Winter 2005 when they can continue under the existing scheme. For such candidates, no processing fee of Rs. 400/- only would be required.

(ii)   Stipulated period of six years or extension of examination registration for two years or examination re-registration for further six years will remain unaltered.

(iii)   At the end of transitory period, i.e., with effect from Summer 2006 examination,

(a) Section 'A' candidates, who fail to secure exemption in any subject up to Winter 2005 examination, will be required to appear in revised scheme only with effect from Summer 2006 examination without processing fee of Rs. 400/- only. The stipulated period of six years shall be counted with effect from Summer 2006 examination.

Section 'B' candidates, who fail to secure exemption in any subject up to Winter 2005 examination, will be required to appear in revised scheme forfeiting their earlier project work, after submission of application for registration of Section 'B' with non-refundable registration fee of Rs. 2000/- only. The Processing fee of Rs. 400/- only shall not be applicable. The stipulated period of six years shall be counted with effect from Summer 2006 examination OR

(b) Candidates of Section 'A' / Section 'B', who secured exemption in one or more subjects till Winter 2005 examination, marks in exempted subjects (50 marks or above) shall be carried forward and remaining subjects are required to be opted from the revised scheme. The detailed procedure for selection of remaining subjects under the revised scheme is also available in print in the December 2004 issue of Technicians’ Journal, pages 48-59. Total number of subjects required to pass in Section 'A' (Non-diploma) would continue to be 10; Section 'A' (Diploma) ¾ 05; and Section 'B' ¾10. The Processing fee of Rs. 400/- only shall not be applicable. Evaluation of project work and laboratory experiments for Section 'B', as specified in Revised Scheme, shall also not be applicable. Marks will be awarded for all subjects, instead of grade, as per the existing rules.

12.   Option of Candidates whose two-year extension will expire in Winter 2004 Examination

(A)  To Switch Over from Existing Scheme to Revised Scheme

The procedure for switching over to Revised Scheme will be the same as laid down under item 11 A (i) and (ii). In addition, Rs. 1200/- only as fee for Examination Re-registration will also be applicable to continue the registration for examination. Six-year re-registration period will be counted from Summer 2005 Examination.

(B)  To Continue in Existing Scheme

(i)   Candidates willing to continue in existing scheme, after Examination Re-registration for six years, would continue to appear in existing scheme. The transitory provisions would be available to them for two consecutive examinations, i.e., Summer 2005 and Winter 2005, without payment of processing fee of Rs. 400/- only.

(ii)   At the end of transitory period, the procedure laid down under 11 (B) (iii) will prevail.

(iii)   Evaluation of project work and laboratory experiments for Section 'B', as specified in Revised Scheme, shall not be applicable. Marks will be awarded in all subjects, instead of grade, as per the existing rules.

13.   Option of Candidates whose six-year registration period will expire in Winter 2004 Examination

(A)  To Switch Over from Existing Scheme to Revised Scheme

The procedure for switching over to Revised Scheme will be the same as laid down under item 11 A (i) and (ii). In addition, Rs. 600/- only as fee for Extension of Examination Registration will also be applicable to continue the registration for examination. Two-year extension period will be counted from Summer 2005 Examination.

(B)  To Continue in Existing Scheme

(i)   Candidates willing to continue in existing scheme, after Extension of Examination Registration of two years, would continue to appear in the existing scheme. The transitory provisions would be available to them for two consecutive examinations, i.e., Summer 2005 and Winter 2005, without payment of processing fee of Rs. 400/- only.

(ii)   At the end of the transitory period, the procedure laid down under 11 (B) (iii) will prevail.

(iii)   Evaluation of project work and laboratory experiments for Section B, as specified in revised scheme, shall not be applicable. Marks will be awarded in all subjects, instead of grade, as per the existing rules.

In case the balance time period to pass Section A / Section B Examination is insufficient, such candidates can apply for Examination Re-registration on payment of Rs. 1200/- only as fee for Examination Re-registration, forfeiting their previous subject(s) exemption(s), as there is no provision of extension of two years in the revised examination rules. Six-year period for Examination Re-registration will be counted from Summer 2006 examination for such candidates.
