Qualification for Membership as described in the Bye-Laws and Regulations of the Council is applicable for every candidates for election as member of any class.

A Corporate Member receives a Letter of election. All the above privileges given to him are stated in this letter.
Application forms for Corporate Membership FIE/MIE/AMIE are available at IEI State and Local Centre. Forms can also be downloaded from the website. Hard copy of the application form duly filled in along with the requisite documents duly attested by FIE/MIE/AMIE as specified in the form must be sent to the Headquarters. The application form must be signed by the supporter(s), who is a member of the IEI in the Category of FIE/MIE/AMIE, quoting the valid membership number. All the copies of documents accompanying the membership form must be attested by one of the supporters who has signed the membership form. Remittance should be made by Demand Draft (DD) in favour of ‘The Institution of Engineers (India)’, payable at Kolkata. The draft should be sent along with the membership application form addressed to The Director (Membership), The Institution of Engineers (India), 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata 700020, superscribing on the top of the envelope ‘Membership Application Form’.
Membership application form for Senior Technician (ST) is available at our website. The application form with prospectus is also available at all State/Local Centres/Overseas Chapters as well as at the Headquarters of IEI. The procedure to apply for ST membership is same as described for Corporate Membership.

Acknowledgement is sent by SMS regarding receipt of money within seven working days after receiving the documents. The SMS massage containing the reference no. should be noted for any future communication. The processing of application for enrollment as corporate member normally takes two months time and that of non corporate ST members takes three months time at present from the date of acknowledgement.
In case of non-receipt of SMS, please use our IVRS No. (033)40155400 to ascertain receipt of money by giving the six-digit DD number. This will also prompt the 12 digit Ref No. which is unique number to identify every application. For any future communication with the headquarters till the enrolment and to know about the status through IVRS, this 12 digit reference number should be quoted/used.
Important points to remember

Please do not forget to attest all the documents i.e. copy of date of birth proof, marksheets, certificates, proof of employment mentioning present designation (or last held designation as applicable for superannuated applicants for Fellowship) and date of holding the post (for corporate membership), chronological engineering career (for corporate membership) etc by the supporters or one of the supporter who has signed the membership application form. The supporter must be a Corporate Member of IEI in the grade of FIE/MIE/AMIE only.

List of applicants, having any deficiency / discrepancy in their applications are available in the website. Please go through the list before making any enquiry at Headquarters.

Applicants are requested to enquiry their status of application for membership only after the normal processing time as mentioned above.
The list of Corporate Members, after their enrollment as FIE/MIE/AMIE will be available in the website under the section ‘New Enrollment’. Every member after the enrolment is expected to receive the letter of Election by Email, Photo ID Card and Certificate by registered post or courier service only.
The list of Senior Technician (ST) members, after the enrolment will be available in the website under the section ‘New Enrollment’. The newly enrolled ST members are expected to receive the Letter of Election and Photo Identity Card.
Letter of election for ST members are forwarded through e-mail after the enrolment. Photo Identity Card for ST members are sent by registered post within two months time after the enrolment.
For non-receipt of Photo Identity Card, ST members are advised to visit our website and check the lists of undelivered Photo Identity Cards.

The first examination that the candidates are eligible to appear is depending on their date of election as mentioned above.
A number of Identity Card is returned ‘undelivered (RLO)’ by the postal authority due to various reason like not claimed / not found / addressee left etc. A list of such membership numbers are available in the website under the section 'Non-delivery – Identity Card’. The list is updated normally once in a month. Please see whether your name is appearing in the list, if you have not received the above documents within the stipulated time as mentioned. If your name is appearing in the list, please send a demand draft for Rs. 300/- for non receipt of Photo ID Card in favour of ‘The Institution of Engineers (India)’, payable at Kolkata, and Rs. 300/- by demand draft (DD).
Existing members are eligible to upgrade or transfer to their higher grade of membership provided they are satisfying the eligibility criteria as laid down in the Bye-Laws and Regulations of the Council of IEI. Please see the abridged Eligibility Guidelines for membership and ‘Bye-Laws and Regulations of the Council’ before applying for the same. The procedure for applying for higher grade of membership is same as described under the section ‘How to become a member’.

Senior Technician (ST) member are requested to apply for change of address by filling up the proforma for ‘Replacement of Identity Card’ along with a demand draft of Rs.300/- (for India/Nepal) or US $ 30(for other countries)..
IVRS is a telephone based automatic response system where the caller can be responded/answered through recorded voice on various issues/queries including membership. All what have to be done by the caller is to dial (033) 40155400 and follow the instructions as sounded by the system. The IVR System can extract data from the central database as maintained in the headquarters and can address queries on the following:-

Chartered Engineer certificate related
No; To apply for Chartered Engineer certificate one must become a Life Corporate Member (i.e. AMIE / MIE / FIE) of IEI.
No; Only Life Corporate Members are eligible for this certificate.
No; However, in all such cases where such Id Card is needed, membership Id Card will serve the purpose.
Examination related Frequently Asked Questions

T/ST members, already pursuing Section A (Non-diploma), Section A (Diploma) and Section B examination, as applicable, but yet to pass all applicable subjects, are eligible to appear in Summer/Winter examination.

New T/ST members enrolled between March 1-August 31 are eligible to appear for the first time in Winter examination (same year) and T/ST members, enrolled between September 1–March 31 (next year), are eligible to appear in Summer examination (next year).

AM/M/F members, intend to pursue engineering in additional branch, are eligible to appear in Summer /Winter Examination.
T/ST/AM/M/F members, eligible to appear in Section A / Section B examination, may either download the Examination Application Form from IEI Website (www.ieindia.org under the tab ‘Academics’) or available in the membership pack and send the same duly filled-in with a demand draft of requisite amount within the stipulated date as mentioned in IEI website under ‘Academics’ for Summer/ Winter examination. Examination application form can also be submitted on-line through payment gateway for those candidates intended to appear from India and Nepal only.
Candidates are eligible to appear in maximum four subjects in Section A (Non-Diploma), Section A (Diploma) and Section B (irrespective of compulsory and optional subjects) examination, including those subjects in which the candidate could not secured exemption ( grade ‘C’ or above) in an earlier attempt.
No; A candidate has to secure minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) as 6. Therefore, a candidate secured grade ‘D’ in a particular subject will be required to re-appear in that subject. However, if a ST member secured at least grade ‘B’ in one of the four subjects of Section A (Diploma) and grade ‘C’ in two subjects and grade ‘D’ in one balance subject in the last attempt, he will be declared pass in Section A (Diploma) examination as he acquired GPA as 6. Grade ‘D’ secured in any subject is not carried forward to the next examination.
Yes; A candidate passed Section A (Non-Diploma)/ Section A (Diploma) examination is eligible to appear in immediate next session for Section B examination provided s/he submits prescribed Registration Form for Section B with requite fee by demand draft/online payment within the stipulated date mentioned in the website. Also, the candidate is expected simultaneously to submit the examination application form with requisite fee.
No; Such application will be summarily rejected and the applicant shall not be permitted to appear in the examination without complying with the requirement.
A Candidate has to pass six compulsory subjects and three optional subjects in any branch of engineering in which Section B examination is being conducted at present, apart from coursework of Project and Laboratory Experiments.
First list of candidates registered for Section B examination is placed on IEI website in first week of May for Summer examination and in first week of November for Winter examination. Candidate whose application for registration of Section B are received late, their names with membership number is placed in IEI website after 7 or 10 days of publication of first list.
After securing exemption in five or more subjects after declaration of result, all eligible candidates are informed about their eligibility with a grade card of examination and guidelines for Project Work and Laboratory Experiments by registered post and option to choose the college for laboratory experiments with a separate prescribed format and to submit the same duly filled-in within the stipulated date.
In case the Project Guide allotted to the candidate is not available, the candidate should contact the Chairman of his attached centre and submit an application to this effect for allotment of an alternate Project Guide. Applications for alternate project guide should not be sent to IEI HQs.
A Candidate shall be required to pass Section A / Section B examination in six years from the date of his enrolment. No further extension is permissible under any circumstance.
Candidates, who are enrolled between 01 March and 31 August, their six years term is being considered from Winter session of current year. |
Similarly, candidates enrolled between 01 September and 31 December, their six years term is being considered from Summer session of next year; and |
the candidates enrolled between 01 January and 28 February their six years term is being considered from Summer session of current year. |
The expiry of registration will be effective after the declaration of results of the winter session of the corresponding year of expiry.
No; A candidate already possessing valid membership is not eligible to apply for new membership. He can apply for Examination Re-registration only with same membership.
There is no provision for two years extension. However, the candidates can apply for Examination Re-registration to appear afresh in Section A / Section B examination as applicable.
Candidates unsuccessful to secure exemption in Section A / Section B, after expiry of six years period, would be eligible to apply for Examination Reregistration as per rules by submitting re-registration application form available on IEI website) duly filled-in along with requisite fee as mentioned in the application form. Candidates for Section B must also submit registration form for Section B with fee as mentioned in application form along with re-registration application form.

Section A (Non-Diploma): Candidates, who passed only one subject till the expiry of five years of stipulated six years period, are eligible to apply for premature re-registration.

Section A (Diploma): Section A (Diploma) candidates are not eligible to apply for premature re-registration.

Section B: Candidates, who are unable to pass any subject till the expiry of five years of stipulated six years period, are eligible to apply for premature re-registration.
Candidates eligible to apply for premature re-registration of Section A/ Section B should submit Premature Re-registration Application Form duly filled-in along with requisite fee mentioned in application form. Candidates for Section B must also submit registration form for Section B with fee as mentioned in application form along with premature re-registration application form.
In case of re-registration, six years term will be counted from immediate Summer session to which the candidate’s previous term of registration has expired irrespective of the month and year the candidate submits his application during the currency period of re-registration.
In case of premature re-registration, six years term will be counted form summer session of the year in which a candidate submits his/her application for this purpose.
The expiry of six-year term will be effective at the winter session of the corresponding year of expiry.
Yes; It is mandatory to get your signature and photograph attested by a corporate member in the grade of FIE/ MIE/ AMIE.
Photocopy of Identity Card or any document issued by the Institution, which bears your name and membership number, should be enclosed with the application form.
Candidates are advised to apply with requisite fee so as to reach at the Headquarters office latest by April 10 for Summer examination and October 10 for Winter examination, failing which they will not be eligible to appear in the respective session.
Yes. Candidates interested to change optional subject(s)/branch of engineering can submit the filled-in application form, available on the IEI website www.ieindia.org along with requisite fee mentioned in the application form.
All the application forms related to Examination, Re-registration, Premature Re-registration, Section B registration, Change of optional subject(s) / branch, duplicate certificate, study material of Section B, No Objection Certificate(NOC), etc. can be downloaded from the website www.ieindia.org at “Download” option under “Academic”.
For candidates residing / applying in / from India and Nepal, online service is at present available to submit Examination Application, Re-registration, Premature Re-registration, Section B Registration and Application for Change of Optional Subjects.
Overseas candidates must submit corresponding applications and pay the requisite fee in US Dollar by demand draft only.

Admit cards for Summer/ Winter examinations shall be available in the website www.ieindia.org at least seven days prior to the commencement of examination. Candidates can take the print out of the same to appear in the examination. No hard copy of the Admit Card will be issued either by the HQs or by the State / Local Centres.
Candidate, not received the Identity Card but possesses the valid roll number, can appear in the examination by submitting the proforma for nonreceipt of Identity Card to the Officer-in-Charge at his examination centre. The proforma can be downloaded from the website www.ieindia.org.
Candidates, who have not completely passed in Section A / Section B, can view / download their grade card in / from the website after 15 days of the declaration of results. Candidates can take the print out of the same and preserve for the record in lieu of hard copy, if not received.
Candidates intend to get their answerscript(s) inspected in person should submit the application form in a prescribed format available on the website www.ieindia.org along with requisite fee within 15 days from the date of declaration of result.
Candidates will be required to come to IEI Headquarters at Kolkata personally to inspect their answerscript(s)for arithmetic correction in totalling of marks and any omission / deletion in evaluation at his / her own expense. It is clarified that verification of answerscript(s) shall not tantamount to re-valuation of answerscript(s). This is only a process of reverification by the candidate. In case any discrepancy is observed by the candidate, the candidate is expected to submit the same in writing to Director (EEA) for appropriate action. Date and time of verification will be informed to candidates by email / letter separately after receipt of their application form with requisite fee.
Candidate interested to obtain NOC should submit the application form (format available on the website www.ieindia.org) along with requisite fee mentioned in the application form along with photocopy of Section A and Section B pass grade cards. On receipt, the same will be sent at the recorded address of the applicant by registered post.
Candidates interested for Appearance Certificate / Language Certificate should submit the application form (format available on the website www.ieindia.org) along with requisite fee mentioned in application form along with photocopy of Section A and Section B pass grade cards. On receipt, the same will be sent at the recorded address of the applicant by registered post.
Candidates, who have passed Section B examination completely in Summer/ Winter session of a year will receive their original pass certificates of Sections A & B examination in the Convocation to be held in next year. Original pass certificates of those candidates, who will not be able to attend the convocation, will be sent by registered post to their recorded addresses after Convocation.
In case a candidate claims that inspite of submitting an examination application form with fee by demand draft/online payment, s/he has neither received the admit card nor his/her name appears in the rejection list displayed in the website, s/he can submit a fresh examination form along with a demand draft of Rs 1500/- , with photocopies of his original examination form, details of demand draft and copy of postal receipt or transaction ID if payment is made online, to the Officer-in-Charge for provisional appearance in the examination. In case the candidate’s claim is found not to be in order, fee deposited by him shall be forfeited and his appearance shall be treated as irregular.
A candidate, interested to obtain the transcript, should submit the prescribed application form (format available on the website www.ieindia.org under the tab ‘Academics’),along with requisite fee mentioned in the application form, together with photocopies of pass grade cards of Section A and Section B examinations. On receipt, the sealed envelope, containing the transcript, will be sent at the recorded address of the applicant by registered post or directly to the concerned university/organisation by registered air-mail based on his specific request.
A candidate, interested to obtain duplicate pass certificate of Sections A & B examinations or pass grade card / marksheet of Section A and / or Section B Examination, he is expected to apply for the same on the prescribed proforma (available on IEI website www.ieindia.org) along with either the original copy of the complaint to be lodged at the nearest police station or an affidavit, citing the specific reason for the same and the requisite fee. On receipt, the duplicate pass certificate / grade card / marksheet shall be sent to the applicant at his recorded address by registered post.
